Wii Sports vs. Real Sports: Which Burns More Calories?

There continues to be a trend towards the convergence of 2 activities once considered diametrically opposed to one another: Playing video games and playing sports. Since the inception of the Nintendo Wii and more recently Wii Fit, much has been speculated as to how effective it is and more specifically how well it translates to the actual sport in which it simulates.

The guesswork is officially over, with The American Council on Exercise releasing a study that compared the two. Here are the results...

The Exercise Pill

A while back on this site, the great Crabby McSlacker posed the hypothetical question: If you could take an exercise pill, would you still workout? Well, this question may not be hypothetical for very long. A new study published in Cell, has demonstrated a 44% increase in treadmill distance in mice who didn't train.

Don't put those running shoes away just yet, though...

Maintaining Weight Loss: How Much Exercise is Required?

So you've lost some of those extra pounds you've been carrying around since you started college/your career/a family/addiction to reality TV... Congratulations! Now get on that treadmill... for an hour! A new (and not terribly surprising) study has shown that it takes about an hour a day to maintain at least a 10% weight loss. I'll breakdown the study and offer some opinions/advice.

New Guidelines: Exercise More, not Harder

This will likely be the battle cry from the U.S. Government when they release their policy on exercise later this year. William Kraus, a Duke University cardiologist and professor of medicine, is one of 13 fitness experts who helped compile information for the guidelines and summarizes the 638 pages of recommendations like this:

Basically, don't sit around all day, and when you do move, you don't have to go at breakneck speed...."Whether you walk a mile, jog a mile or sprint a mile, it burns about 100 kilocalories," with the same health benefits.

I'm mixed on the recommendations, here's why;
